Quick Start (Page 2) |
| Initial Configuration (Non-Wizard) |
|
This section will show you how to adjust your group and server lists, as well as configure each of them. Once you have got your groups and servers set up the way you like, it is highly recommended you save the configuration using the File > Save menu item. In the future, it can then be loaded again using the File > Load command. NewsBin will use the previously opened configuration by default. Groups and Servers are listed in their respective tabs in the Groups/Servers Pane, which is by default located in the left of the screen. |

| Initial Configuration (Non-Wizard) > Servers |
|
Servers can be added, and each server can be configured using the
To create a new server, simply type in a new name in the Server Name text box, and fill in the details appropriately. Note that this means there is no command to rename servers, since changing the name of an existing server will just create a new entry with the new name, leaving the old entry there. You may of course, then delete the old entry if you wish to. You can set a connection limit and download limit per server. For example, if your server only allows 4 simultaneous connections, set the connection limit to 4 and even if you have NewsBin set to use 8 connections, it will never open more than 4 with that server. Each server in the server list may be enabled or disabled at any time by clicking on the box to the left of the server's name in the Servers Tab. When a server is disabled, NewsBin will not try to connect to it, or download anything from it. The amount downloaded from each server can be monitored in the Servers Tab. When the download limit is reached, you will see messages in the Status Messages Tab saying that the download limit has been reached for that server. While the server is in this state, it is treated as disabled. Since NewsBin has no way of knowing when your server's limit is reset, you will need to reset NewsBin's Download Count manually when you are able to download from that server again. This is done by selecting the server(s) you wish to reset, right clicking on it, and selecting Reset Download Count. If you configure NewsBin with multiple news servers, it will download headers from all enabled servers simultaneously (unless you have the Preferences > Options > Network > Sequential Servers option enabled). When you download posts, NewsBin will start with the first enabled server in your server list. You can re-arrange the priority of the servers by click and dragging the servers in the Servers Tab to the order you want to use them. The server NewsBin will use most will generally be the one on top, and the least used will be the bottom one. If any posts (including parts of multi-part posts) do not exist on the first enabled server, or the first server can not be contacted, NewsBin will check subsequent servers until it can find the post available to download. TIP: The recommended configuration is to have your cheapest, highest data rate, highest bandwidth server first and put more expensive but more complete servers last. Typically this translates to using your ISP's default server first and only using any pay servers afterwards, for fills. |

Groups can only be used by NewsBin once
they have been added to the Group List in the Groups Tab. To do this, you must select them from the Preferences

To retrieve an up to date list of all the groups carried on the first enabled server in the Server List, you can press the Download Groups Button in the Get Latest Groups section of the window. You can search through the groups available by using the Group Name Filters section of the window. Selecting any of the checkboxes on the left will limit the groups displayed in the list to those that contain those words. An exception to this is the Filter Out Low Post Groups (Under 200) box which, when checked, will prevent the display of any groups with post counts of under 200. To the right of these boxes, there is the Display Groups Containing text box, which works similarly to these, but using the text you enter into the box rather than a pre-defined word. Note that these filters are stacked, which means that all the ones you have checked are applied at once. For example, if you have Binaries, Games, and MP3/Music all checked, only groups which contain all of the words "binaries", "games", and "MP3" (or "Music") will be displayed in the list. To subscribe to a group, simply check the box to the left of it's name in the list, or (even if it isn't displayed in the list,) type it's name into the text box beside the Manual Add Button, and then press the button. When you're finished with this screen, pressing the OK Button will close it. |

Once you have subscribed to all the groups you are interested in, you may want to adjust how they are displayed. Clicking on the column header Groups in the Groups Tab, the groups will be sorted in alphabetical order. Clicking once will sort in descending order; a second click will change to ascending order. You can also re-order groups by clicking and dragging a group up or down in the list into whichever order you need. When processing multiple groups, NewsBin processes them in the same order as they are shown in this window. The checkmark to the left of the group name can be turned on or off by single-clicking
in the box. Enabled groups (those with the checkmark on) will be processed when

Please visit our registration page for the latest information on how to purchase NewsBin. Once you have purchased NewsBin, you will need to enter your registration information. From the main menu select Register NewsBin... and the following screen will be displayed.
Once registered, this option will disappear from the Menu Bar. You can still get to this screen through Help > Register/Update Key if you need to access your registration information in the future. Ninety percent of our support questions related to registering NewsBin are a result of typographical errors when entering the key information. We strongly recommend that you use windows copy and paste functions to enter your key info from the email message sent to you when you register. Use the shortcut Ctrl+C to copy and Ctrl+V to paste each item from your email message into the appropriate fields. Make sure you do not accidentally copy leading or trailing spaces with your key information. |

Posts are displayed in the Post List Tab
of the main screen. Note that in NewsBin, multi-part
posts are displayed using a single line in the Post List. There are
many different status icons that
may be displayed beside a post, though for now just keep in mind that
The number of files NewsBin will attempt to download at one time is governed by the number of downloaders you have. You can set the number of downloaders used either through the Preferences > Options > Connections setting, or by using the up/down buttons in the Thumbnails Pane. Valid settings are 1-8. Note that if you set the number of downloaders higher than the number of connections allowed for the first server (either through NewsBin's connection limit setting for the server, or as set by the server's policies), this will force NewsBin to attempt to download posts from servers lower in the list even if the first server does have the posts in question. Files are saved in the folder specified in the Preferences > Options > Setup > Download Path box. |

If you wish to go through the posts by hand and decide what to download manually, make sure the Utilities > Automatic Download option is not checked. Then load the headers for the groups you are interested in using one of the two methods below. Once you have the headers displayed in the Post List, you may go through the list, and add the files you're interested in to the Download List by either double clicking on each individual post, or by selecting multiple posts right-clicking on them, and selecting Add to Download List. There are many ways to reduce the clutter in the Post List to find exactly what you are looking for. For more information on these methods, refer to the Main Manual. Posts in the Download List will automatically start downloading as soon as
a downloader is free. You can pause the
downloads at any time by pressing the Note that the default filter profile used by NewsBin will prevent small posts from showing up in the post list, since they are very rarely files. If you wish to see these, you will have to select "Ignore Filters" on the Filters Bar. |

If you wish to retain the new status while you are browsing the groups, you can use the Download Latest (Ctrl-G) command in the right click menu of the group. If you only wish to process one group, you may also double click on it's entry in the Group Tab. You can also process multiple groups in order by selecting a number of groups using the shortcut shift+click to select a range or ctrl+click to select non-contiguous groups and then perform the Download Latest function using the shortcut Ctrl+G or the right-click menu. This will allow you to load all the headers from similar groups into the post list at one time, thereby avoiding the need to look over the same post multiple times when it's being cross posted among these groups. Be warned though that all headers are stored in RAM, and loading multiple groups at once is a sure fire way to use up great chunks of RAM (large groups may contain as much as 500Mb of headers each). Also note that MS Windows® does not like to store that much data in RAM, and if left alone will write much of it to the hard drive. If you either run out of physical RAM, or have it written to the hard drive due to inactivity, when you go to use NewsBin again, MS Windows® can take a long period of time (sometimes hours) to load the needed portion of headers back into memory. During this time, your hard drive will be working constantly, and NewsBin will not respond to any user interaction. It's also possible for your whole computer to become sluggish and unusable. So be careful when using this feature not to load up more groups than your computer can handle. |
